The name Thirty Eight Chairs comes from the age of Gino Forlano (owner and director) at the time of opening. Thirty Eight Chairs has stylish wooden tables and chairs offset by industrial light fittings, a red meat slicer specially imported from Italy, an old school weighing scale and a comfortable marble Italian bar, where bottles of wine and Italian Aperitivi stand in carefully ordered rows.
Due to it’s intimate space, everything has been well thought out, between the vintage and the contemporary. Each item within the restaurant perfectly finds its place. It is the basis of the modern Italian locanda with an old school style of service.
Thirty Eight Chairs doubles up as a bar during the daytime serving breakfast and lunch. We serve exquisite coffee and biscuits, muffins and pastries, as well as breakfast. For lunch, we offer our menu as well as classic Italian panini and piadine. In the evening, Thirty Eight Chairs offers the most intimate yet lively dining experience in South Yarra, where delicious dishes meet excellent service.
Thirty Eight Chairs was opened by Gino Forlano in April 2012; and Gino was instrumental in the entire design concept. “No matter where you sit, you can see every table, but never have anybody from another table sitting in front of you. Every angle provides a different feeling,” says Gino. “It’s the story of a group of friends that want to unite their passion for hospitality together with an ambassadorial role for their homeland”.
The staff, who are mainly Italian, help to make Thirty Eight Chairs more than just a dining venue, but a destination. “We have people from different regions, but with very specific backgrounds, so customers get to experience different parts of Italy as well as unique personalities. Our staff try and transmit a little bit of their home to the restaurant,” says Gino. “I love food and service. Cooking and serving is like most things in life, you get what you put in, and with little effort, we have created something spectacular. Thirty Eight Chairs; normal people with Italian passports!”
We are conveniently located at 4 Bond Street, South Yarra Victoria 3141.
